Sustainable development

We work closely with a range of national, regional and local partners to ensure that sustainable development is embedded into all their policies and programmes. Sustaine is the champion body for sustainable development and was established to provide a regional focus for the sustainable development agenda.

Sustainable Development aims to enable all people to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations. It is a key government policy at both national and regional level and is an issue that affects every business, organisation and individual. More information on the national picture

Integrated Regional Framework
The latest version was launched on 2 April 2008 as is available from Sustaine's site.

Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The task of sustainable development is very important.  It means meeting four objectives at the same time in the region, the UK and the world as a whole:

  • social progress that recognises the needs of everyone
  • effective protection of the environment
  • prudent use of natural resources
  • maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment.
