Environment and Rural

Government Office for London (GOL) aims to promote greater understanding of environmental and sustainable development issues and ensure that Government policies are fully integrated into strategies and initiatives in London.

Government Offices promote sustainable development, protect the environment and help rural areas. We make sure the policies of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) are implemented and properly integrated with the work of other Government departments. Government Offices promote sustainable development, protect the environment and help rural areas. We make sure the policies of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) are implemented and properly integrated with the work of other Government departments. More information on the national picture.

GOL’s Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) achieves this by working in partnership with regional, sub regional and local organisations helping deliver Government policies and outcomes relating to a wide range of sustainable development and environmental issues. This includes climate change, waste management, energy and resource efficiency, food, natural environment, local environmental quality, sustainable development, sustainable schools and low carbon economy.

We also represent the views and interests of people in London to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Department (BIS) and Department for Education.

For more details on the different areas in which ESDU works please use the navigation bar on the left hand side of this page.
