Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) works closely with a
wide range of local and regional partners to take forward the regional
environment and rural agenda in a number of priority areas including:
- promoting sustainable development
- encouraging waste minimisation/recycling
- ensuring that the specific needs of rural areas are addressed in policy
and programme delivery at regional and local level
- implementing the Regional Delivery Plan under the Strategy for
Sustainable Farming and Food
- promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy
- mitigating/adapting to climate change
Some of our main regional responsibilities are to:
- oversee the regional implementation of the Rural Strategy 2004,
including the further development and implementation of the East Midlands
Rural Action Plan
- support the East Midlands Rural Affairs Forum (EMRAF)
- assist with the targeting and communication of the regional elements of
the Rural Development Programme for England
- engaging in rural planning, food and health and forestry issues
East Midlands Rural Affairs Forum (EMRAF)
GOEM is a member of EMRAF which provides a forum for sharing information on
issues and initiatives affecting rural areas.
The Forum champions rural interests in the region by identifying issues of
concern, giving views on new regional proposals and promoting the
development of regional initiatives with the aim to improve the quality of
life in the region’s rural areas.

Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food (SSFF)
We work with regional partners and farming and food industry
representatives to ensure that ‘Think Farming and Food’, the
Regional Delivery Plan for the Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food,
is implemented and that action is taken to support regional skills and
business, food chain and land management activities.
