Regional Development Agencies

The East Midlands Development Agency (emda) is one of nine regional development agencies in England. They aim to bring a regional focus to economic development.

Government Offices (GOs) work with the nine Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) . More information on the national picture

We work with emda on a variety of issues to improve and develop the East Midlands.

In relation to emda, we are responsible for:

  • influence their strategic policy in line with government objectives – e.g. regional economic strategy, and corporate plan targets
  • administer appointments to the Board of emda in line with guidelines from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills
  • represent emda’s interests within government and elsewhere in the region, including maintaining an overview and understanding of emda’s work
  • work to achieve consistency between the Regional Assembly’s scrutiny and our relationship withemda
  • administer a framework of controls governing transactions by emda and managing corporate relations
  • undertake financial monitoring including payment of grant in aid
  • monitor emda’s activity to brief departments and Ministers and contribute to the assessment of emda’s performance
