Culture and Leisure

Across the East Midlands, cultural, tourism and sporting businesses and creative industries make a very significant contribution to the economic and social regeneration of the region.

The importance of culture, leisure and sport in addressing issues such as social inclusion, health and crime is becoming increasingly apparent. Government Offices work with a range of regional and local partners to identify where links can be made with other government programmes at local level. More information on the national picture

The importance of culture, leisure and sport in addressing issues such as social inclusion, health and crime is becoming increasingly apparent. Government Offices work with a range of regional and local partners to identify where links can be made with other government programmes at local level.

Culture also has the potential to enrich individual lives, enhance quality of life and reach out to communities which feel excluded. Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) works with a range of regional and local partners to identify where links can be made with other government programmes at a local level.

Government Office aims

Government Office provides a regional focus for the Department for Culture Media and Sport’s (DCMS) national policies and programmes on:

  • sport
  • arts
  • museums, libraries and archives
  • heritage and architecture
  • the creative industries, including film and broadcasting, tourism, the lottery, licensing and gambling

We promote the work of the DCMS and its sponsored bodies in the regions. This includes developing partnerships and linkages between us and DCMS and the wider cultural sector to gain an understanding of regional cultural needs.

One of our key tasks is to support the East Midlands Cultural Partners in delivering against its programme of shared priorities.

Government Office key responsibilities:

  • effective advice and information on DCMS policy within the region and close liaison with the DCMS-funded regional agencies and partners including public, private and voluntary sectors
  • working with regional partners to enhance access to culture and sport to increase and broaden its impact
  • supporting the delivery of culture and sport services through local authorities
  • the culture, creativity and enterprise agendas to take a more practical and effective role in helping with the delivery of the wider government cross-cutting agenda of regeneration, education and social cohesion through the Government Office
  • promoting a culture into relevant regional and local strategies such as the Regional Economic Strategy, Regional Spatial Strategy, and Sustainable Community Strategies
