Local Government Improvement

Local Government has a key role to play as a community leader, service provider and employer in tackling the most important challenges facing their areas and meeting the needs of their communities. It is therefore important that they are well run and can react to changing demands. Government Offices provide support for them to do this.

Supporting improvement

Our vision for Yorkshire and The Humber is for:

  • strong, sustainable and high performing local government
  • continuous improvement in the effectiveness, efficiency, quality and responsiveness of services delivered or commissioned by local authorities.

To achieve this GOYH will:

  • identify, with partners, the challenges facing local authorities in the region
  • build on successes to date
  • promote collaboration and learning across the local government community in the region

Our success will be measured by:

·        CAA scores

·        local government achieving national and local performance targets,

·        positive inspection reports and

·        through various national and regional programmes that recognise excellence.

GOYH is working closely with local authorities across the region to deliver success and raise performance through the following initiatives:

  • Local Area Agreements
  • Capacity Building and the Regional Improvement Partnership
  • Beacon Councils

The GOYH Places Directorate takes a lead role in the following areas :

  • Working with Local Government Yorkshire and Humber (LGYH) and the Regional Improvement Partnership on regional capacity building projects.
  • Project managing GOYH work on Local Area Agreements including the reward element.
