The planning system plays an important role in our lives. Effective land use is vital for the well being of the country. Planning is about delivering what people want: jobs, homes, lively city centres, better transport, and sensitive care for our historic buildings and the countryside.

We advise and act for government ministers on important planning issues affecting the region. We are also a communication channel for regional stakeholders and the public on planning issues that may affect regional or national concerns. This includes a promotional role with local authorities and other stakeholders to deliver a cultural change in planning towards a new proactive, positive planning system to deliver the sustainable communities programme.
GOWM has also supported the development of the Regional Spatial Strategy document, which can be found on the Regional Assembly website below.

- Planning Aid: A voluntary service offering free, independent and professional advice on town planning matters to community groups and individuals who cannot afford to employ a planning consultant. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
- A qualified planning agent or consultant for professional advice
- Your local elected councillor or Member of Parliament - A list of regional MP's and MEP's can be found under the 'Our Region' heading, located on the front page (final topic heading on the left-hand side).
- The Local Government Ombudsman if you feel that the local council has made a mistake in its decision-making process
For local authorities assistance is available from the Planning Advisory Service which was launched in December 2004 by the Deputy Prime Minister and aims to give planners help in proving faster, fairer, more efficient and better quality services.
