Productive time is about making best use of staff time. It is not about getting staff to work harder, but about enabling staff to work smarter. This section sets out how efficiency and productive time are likely to impact on the Service.
Productive Time is about maximising the time spent by clinical, managerial and administrative staff on activities aimed at improving services for patients. It's about working smarter, not harder.
Efficiency is about making best use of all available resources for provision of public services and minimise any 'waste' in the system. Productive time is expected to yield £2.7 billion by 2007/8 against a 2003/4 baseline. This represents up to half of the total efficiency gains for health and nearly a fifth of cross-governmental efficiency review savings.
