The Department is committed to delivering health care which is free from discrimination on the grounds of age. This encompasses the National Service Framework for Older People, and the Dignity in Care campaign.

Dignity in care

The Dignity in Care initiative was set up to ensure all older people are treated with dignity when using health and social care services. The campaign was extended in August 2007 to cover some mental health services.

Fair access to care services

Guidance for councils and care trusts to make sure everyone has fair access to services regardless of age. People’s eligibility for care should be based exclusively on their needs and risk factors.The Fair access to care services (FACS) guidance provides councils with an eligibility framework for adult social care.
