Asylum screening unit


If you want to claim asylum and you are already in the UK, you can make your application at our asylum screening unit in Croydon, south of London.

You can either make an appointment in advance or attend the walk-in service. If you want to guarantee that you will be seen on a particular day, we recommend that you make an appointment.

We do not refund travelling costs or offer any monetary assistance for travelling to and from the asylum screening unit.

The process of applying for asylum may take several hours to complete. There is also a possibility you may be detained. If we decide to detain you, we will give you a letter explaining why.

  • Asylum screening unit - Croydon

    Facilities:

    • Coffee shop selling hot and cold drinks and snacks
    • Vending machines selling hot and cold drinks
    • Male and female multi-denominational prayer rooms
    • Unisex baby changing room
    • Public pay phones

    Facilities for the disabled:

    • Lifts
    • Accessible toilets
    • Parking for disabled badge holders in the  public car park opposite Lunar House, adjacent to the Whitgift Centre.

    We do not have the facilities for children to be supervised; children should be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. If you are bringing children, please ensure that you have enough food and drink and where appropriate, milk and nappies.  If you are taking any type of medication that you may need to take within 24 hours you must ensure that you bring it with you.

  • Further submissions unit - Liverpool

    From 14 October 2009, any failed asylum seeker who initially claimed asylum before 5 March 2007 can only make a further submission in person. You must: 

    • first telephone the further submissions unit on 0151 237 0980 to make an appointment - you will be given the date, time and location of the appointment; and 
    • then attend this appointment at the Liverpool further submissions unit to hand in your further written submission.

    Please note that this appointment will not involve any interview or meeting with the decision-maker.

    There is no walk-in service at the unit.

    Once you have booked your appointment by telephone, you should receive a confirmation letter. You should bring this letter to the further submissions unit when you attend the appointment.

    If you are unable to travel to the FSU to make your further submissions in person because:

    • you have a disability or severe illness and are physically unable to travel
    • you are imprisoned or in detention and are unable to make their submissions in person; or
    • you are an Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Child and cannot travel to the Further Submissions Unit in Liverpool due to the distance involved 

    you will not have to telephone the booking line. You should fax your further submissions to the Further Submissions Team in Liverpool on 0151 237 6381 together with documentary evidence to show how you meet at least one of the exceptional criteria. If you are considered not to meet the exceptional criteria you will be advised that you need to book an appointment to make your further submissions in person.

    Phone line opening times

    The phone line will open at 0900 and close after 75 appointments have been booked.  The phone line will then reopen at 1400 and remain open until another 75 appointments are booked.
