Climate change

Overview

The Earth's climate is changing. Rising global temperatures will bring changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather.

We need to avoid making the problem worse, so cutting carbon emissions is a priority. But all of us - individuals, businesses, Government and public authorities - will also need to adapt our behaviour to respond to the challenges of climate change.

Government is taking action on climate change – both to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to prepare for a changing climate:

  • DECC is coordinating work by Government departments to produce Carbon Reduction Delivery Plans. For more information, see DECC’s pages.
  • Visit our mitigation pages to see how Defra is working to reduce emissions.
  • Defra is coordinating work by Government departments to produce Departmental Adaptation Plans, see our adaptation pages.

In March 2010, Defra published it’s Climate Change Plan.  The Plan explains what Defra is doing across its policy areas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to address the risks and opportunities that climate change presents.
