Welcome to the Association of Police Authorities ...

"the national voice for police authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland"

The Association of Police Authorities was set up on 1st April 1997 to represent police authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, both on the national stage and locally.  It influences policy on policing and it supports local police authorities in their important role.

Who Polices the Police?

The Association of Police Authorities is highlighting the crucial role of accountability in policing, including the importance of ensuring that policing decisions are taken on behalf of the whole community, and not for party-political reasons.

The leaflet will be distributed to Chief Constables and other policing stakeholders across the country, to emphasise police authorities’ role in putting communities at the heart of policing.

Police Governance and Accountability

Recent research carried out by the Northern Ireland Policing Board compared policing governance and accountability in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, France, and the United States, with current arrangements in England and Wales

The research found there is no evidence to suggest that boards or commissions appointed by elected mayors in the USA truly reflect the communities they serve.  The research also found that there has been consistent movement in the USA towards making police oversight more independent through the introduction of models similar to those already established in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Please find the comparitive research here: Police Governance and Accountability.
