Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell commented on the fourth anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri on Saturday 14 February. He said:

'On the fourth anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others in Beirut, I would like to reiterate the UK's support to the Special Tribunal of Lebanon. We remain determined to see justice done.

We have been strongly involved in the UN’s efforts to move forward on setting up the Tribunal and we have committed around $1.5 million for its first year of operations. The Tribunal's establishment next month is one of many challenges that lie ahead for Lebanon in 2009, others include the up coming elections and the ongoing dialogue for national reconciliation. I assure Lebanon and its people that the UK will remain a friend throughout.'
