HM Treasury appointment

Following a Whitehall-wide competition the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Chancellor, has appointed Tom Scholar as Second Permanent Secretary, International and Finance directorate, HM Treasury. 

Tom Scholar is currently the Managing Director, International and Finance directorate, HM Treasury.

The appointment takes place with immediate effect .

  1. Tom Scholar, 40, is currently Managing Director, International and Finance directorate, HM Treasury. Previously he was Chief of Staff and Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, 2007-8. From 2001 to 2007 he was Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and Minister (Economic) at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. From 1998 to 2001 he was Principal Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Prior to that he held a range of positions at HM Treasury.
  2. This appointment followed an Whitehall-wide competition chaired by a Civil Service Commissioner.
