Brief Description
The FSA is a non-Ministerial Government department that protects the public's health and consumer interests in relation to food. It aims to deliver ‘safe food and healthy eating for all’, so that consumers can eat safer food and choose healthier and more balanced meals. It provides science and evidence-based advice and information to the public and to Government on food safety, nutrition and diet. At the same time, effective food law enforcement and inspection must be delivered across a dynamic sector made up of over 560,000 businesses – ranging from artisan food producers to major supermarket chains.
Vacancy description
The Director of Operations is a new role, reporting to the Chief Executive, established to manage all corporate operations functions; delivering stretching operational and financial targets across the UK. A pivotal role within a new, more flexible and efficient structure, the Director of Operations will be the key lead on logistical business priorities, setting the operational strategy and leading its implementation at the centre and across the UK, engaging with a dispersed workforce of over 1,900.
The Director of Operations will have a clear track record of successfully managing continuous improvement in an organisation of comparable size and complexity, taking strategy and translating it into operational objectives. They will have delivered aggressive cost reduction programmes while maintaining high service delivery targets. In the two years to January 2009 gross cost of all operations was reduced to £68.9m from £91.3m. The challenge is to further reduce this in coming years. A high profile role in an organisation with many stakeholders, this requires excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
