Big Lunch film competition winners meet Sir Gus

14th October 2009

Three budding filmmakers are celebrating after winning a Civil Service film competition aimed at showcasing a new community project.

The video, produced by Helena Markovic, Fiona Simpson and Gillian Hudson from the Home Office, was picked as the overall winner of the Big Lunch short film competition.

Judges decided the film of a street party in Mayall Road, London captured the fun and community focused atmosphere of the Big Lunch initiative and were impressed by the range of activities on offer for residents.

The three directorial maestros were invited to a special reception last month where they met Head of the Civil Service Sir Gus O’Donnell.

The Big Lunch project consisted of a series of co-ordinated street parties which took place across the country in July this year.

Dreamed up by Tim Smit and Paul Twivy, the brains behind the Eden Project, the initiative aimed to get neighbours to meet each other over a plate of tasty homemade food.

The event was the first time a series of planned street parties had been organised since the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. Around two million people across the UK enjoyed street parties involving games, live music, picnics and BBQs.

The Big Lunch project aims to strengthen community spirit and encourage other local initiatives such as Neighbourhood Watch schemes and volunteering groups. Another series of Big Lunch street parties are planned for 2010.
