Black History Month (BHM)

20th October 2009

To celebrate this year’s Black History Month a number of Departments came together to organise a cross-government event “No more Excuses” - The power of positive role models which was held in DEFRA’s Nobel House on 5 October.

Black History Month was launched to recognise the contributions of Africa to the economic, cultural and political life of the UK.  BHM is open to everyone and designed to inform people about African heritage and history.

To celebrate this year’s Black History Month a number of Departments including DEFRA, Cabinet Office, Communities and Local Government,  Work and Pensions, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Home Office and HM Revenue and Customs came together to organise a cross-government event “No more Excuses” - The power of positive role models which was held in DEFRA’s Nobel House on 5 October.

Speakers include Mike Anderson (DEFRA), Rob Neil (Ministry of Justice and national REACH role model), Karen Chouhan, (Director of Equanomics), Sotonye Diri  (author of ‘No More Excuses’) and Selvin Brown (awarded Civil Servant of the year at the recent GG2 awards).

A Black History Month photographic exhibition also provided a backdrop to the event providing a pictorial description of black activism in Britain.

The event was a great success and acknowledged the role we all have to play as positive role models to encourage a wholly inclusive society.
