Whitehall set for future challenges

14th December 2009

The latest Capability Reviews show the Civil Service is continuing to improve as it prepares to tackle the challenges of the next decade.

Re-reviews for the Treasury and HM Revenue & Customs were published today, as well as baseline assessments for the Department of Energy & Climate Change and the Serious Fraud Office.

A report looking at how effective the review programme is was also published.

The Capability Review programme was launched four years ago by Cabinet Secretary and head of the Home Civil Service Sir Gus O'Donnell. At the time, nothing like it had been attempted in Whitehall before.

‘It represented a real breakthrough in openness and accountability,’ Sir Gus said. ‘I am delighted that four years on, the programme has not only been delivered successfully but has also driven real improvement and reform across the Civil Service.’

But there is no room for complacency he said: ‘We have much more to do. We have now refreshed the review model to put a focus on innovation, efficiency and delivery, and in future the Capability Review approach will be extended to key arms-length bodies.’
