What do we do at the NAO?

The National Audit Office’s value for money work involves producing 60 major reports a year examining the value for money (VFM) achieved by a wide range of government projects and programmes. We also produce good practice guidance for other organizations. Our VFM reports, which often hit the national headlines, identify waste and highlight areas for improving the way public money is spent, so that taxpayers receive services of the highest quality and of the best value. Our work saves the taxpayer millions of pounds and we make a real contribution to improving the delivery of public services. Vacancy description

What does the job involve?

The role of Researcher is to apply strong quantitative research and analytical skills to our value for money (VFM) audits. Researchers work as integral members of VFM audit teams alongside qualified accountants and sector or topic specialists. Our VFM audits cover the whole spectrum of central government departments and activity and Researchers work flexibly across different study topics and reports. Teams are responsible for delivering high quality VFM reports to time and budget and for ensuring that our work achieves most impact. Whilst Researchers support directly our audit work, previous experience of audit is not essential – we would train you in some of our main VFM audit methodologies.


Your core role will involve the following:-


Gathering, analysing and interpreting research data to support study teams
Applying NAO VFM audit methodologies (the NAO will provide relevant training and support)
Providing written and graphical summaries of research findings
Contributing to drafting clear and succinct reports
Providing written and verbal briefings to more senior managers and members of study teams

Whilst you may have a strong background as an economist or statistician or some other quantitative discipline, you will not be working as a specialist professional economist or statistician. You will, however, draw upon your background to contribute to our work on audit assignments and to support study teams.


In terms of skills, we are seeking to enhance our quantitative research skills. So we are looking to recruit people from a variety of backgrounds – such as economics, social research, statistics, operational research, and performance measurement – with strong quantitative research skills. You will need to be willing and able to work alongside our qualified accountants and other topic or sector specialists to deliver our VFM audit reports.


You will have a strong academic track record. We would expect you to have at least 300 UCAS points, at least a 2:1 first degree in a numerate discipline (or one with a significant quantitative element) and a Masters degree or PhD with a strong numerical/ quantitative element.

Who are we looking to recruit?

We aim to recruit 20 people with an intake in the summer and a second intake in the early autumn but we can be flexible around this.
