Brief Description

Job Purpose:

You will lead the editing, and commissioning, of guidance that is at the heart of the digital continuity service. Working closely with the Communications Manager, and Policy and Engagement Manager you will ensure appropriate promotion and marketing of the guidance.

The role requires you to use your editorial skills and experience to ensure that guidance owners deliver a robust and high quality product, on time, and in budget.

Role and Responsibilities:

• To lead guidance production for the Digital Continuity project. This will involve:
• Scheduling and planning a very busy workload, and working across the organisation to ensure products are delivered to the highest standards, on time and in budget.
• Using your expertise and judgement to ensure that product descriptions, outlines, page plans and drafts meet the highest editorial standards.
• Anticipating, identifying and resolving blocks to guidance production (for example lack of resources, competing priorities).
• Securing and allocating resources needed to deliver guidance. This will include negotiating with internal colleagues and senior staff, including Heads of Department, to ensure guidance fully reflects the breadth of expertise at The National Archives, is accurate and consistent with other guidance produced. It will also include researching and commissioning internal and external authors.
• To lead on guidance consultation and approval (internally and externally), using your editorial skills and experience to resolve potential conflict (for example differing views on what should or shouldn’t be included, different styles of writing and so on).
• To develop a good understanding of the concepts, processes and technology that underpin digital continuity and engage with specialists across various professions to appropriately scope guidance products.
• To act as brand champion for guidance, ensuring that it is written in house style, is accurate, consistent and easy to read – rewriting guidance as necessary.
• Sharing your editorial and copywriting expertise with the digital continuity team, to drive and raise standards.



• Track record and experience of leading the commissioning and editing complex editorial projects (for example research reports, educational resources/learning packs) and simpler work, such as checklists, case studies, templates
• Evidence of excellent copywriting skills, able to work with authors to rewrite their copy as necessary to suit audiences’ needs, managing and resolving conflicting opinions and input
• Able to share skills with non-specialists to raise standards and performance
• Able to demonstrate a significant period of relevant experience of researching and working with authors, negotiating contracts, and motivating and managing others to deliver to tight deadlines
• Ability to priorities and make decisions, able to demonstrate ability to identify problems and resolve them in a constructive way
• Experience of scheduling, project management and strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan and deliver high quality work to tight deadlines, and in budget
• Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills – you will be a real team player who works constructively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure delivery to a high standard
• A strong communicator – able to grasp and explain complex ideas simply, both verbally and in writing
• Proven ability to understand and prioritise problems and to be resourceful in their resolution


• An editorial qualification
• Experience of/understanding of writing to Plain English standards
• An understanding of information management issues and related technology
• Experience of producing teaching materials
• Knowledge of the Kanban work flow process
