Brief Description

The FSA is going through considerable change. A new strategic plan is being developed for the period commencing in 2010, the FSA’s executive agency, the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) is about to go through a machinery of Government change to make it an integrated part of the FSA. This element of the change programme is entitled ‘One Agency’. The Corporate Services Function of both the FSA and the MHS are combining to create an ‘Integrated Corporate Service’ and the ISTED ICT Service Delivery Team has the key role in the convergence to a single ICT Infrastructure platform and quality ICT service that will meet all the business requirements of the One Agency, whilst adhering to the required Government Information and ICT Security Governance

A close working relationship will need to be formed between the ISTED ICT Service Delivery Team and the ISTED IS Strategy and Development Team to ensure that end to end processes are embedded for all Changes to the Test, Staging and Production environments.


Vacancy description

The Database Administrator will be responsible for managing the development and support of SQL Server Databases to underpin the delivery of electronic business services. The post holder will contribute to the achievement of the Agency’s organisational aims of cost effectiveness, consistency and equity by taking responsibility for reviewing business requirements and ensuring that technical specifications are implemented in line with these.

In addition, the post holder will provide a SQL Server administration and support service that follows ITIL principles to deliver a continually improving ICT service to all staff and stakeholders. This role will be essential to the business in the achievement of efficiency savings from working towards the ‘Transforming Government Agenda’ to ‘e’ enable service delivery.


  • Extensive experience of the build and configuration of Microsoft SQL Server
  • Proven experience in monitoring and tuning databases to provide a high availability service
  • Good working knowledge of Transactional SQL, Stored Procedures and Data Interface technologies
  • Experience of managing MS SQL Server security and backup
  • Knowledge of storage and SAN technologies
  • Being Microsoft qualified or a willingness to undertake or complete such study and/or proven experience of operating at an equivalent level within a complex ITIL based ICT service delivery environment
