Brief Description

This post has been created to improve financial information for planning and decision-making within the Food and Environment Research Agency, a recently formed Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The successful candidate will be responsible for a team of nine management accountants and management information employees who will work closely with other Fera Programmes to develop robust financial plans, business cases and ‘what if’ scenario reviews.

Vacancy description

  • Day to day management of the Management Accounting Team providing support and constructive challenge to the operational front line staff
  • Provide support with the Head of Programme to Executive Directors as required, in the management of their Programmes
  • Lead the improvement of management accounting systems and processes in Fera, including providing appropriate training and guidance to non-financial managers
  • Co-ordinate and manage the business planning, budget and forecasting processes
  • Support Programme managers with the development of robust business cases and investment appraisals
  • Supporting programmes as customers of our service and ensure that all staff in the team have a customer oriented outlook / ethos whilst ensuring that all decisions are made for the benefit of the agency as a whole not just the programme
  • Evaluate business cases/investment proposals on finance-related criteria e.g. viability.


• Practical IT skills in particular Microsoft Office, Word and Excel


• CCAB Qualified Accountant and extensive relevant experience of working in a financial role
• Candidates without this level of qualification would have to demonstrate extensive management accounting experience


• Effective team leadership and communication skills.
• Experience of implementing change to improve financial management
• Experience of developing and operating costing systems
