Brief Description

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is the UK body charged with investigating marine accidents with the sole purpose of saving lives and improving safety at sea. Based in Southampton, it is funded and administered by the Department for Transport, but is operationally independent.

It is responsible for investigating accidents and incidents involving UK vessels anywhere in the world, and all vessels of any nationality within UK territorial waters. Its aim of improving safety of life at sea and the avoidance of accidents in future, is achieved through rigorous investigations and the publication of reports containing recommendations to those best placed to act on them. Its investigations are quite separate from those for blame or litigation.

The Branch has 40 staff and an annual budget of £4.1m. Specialist staff who conduct the investigations have a professional background, most having served at sea as a Master or a Chief Engineer.


Vacancy description

The Role

The Deputy Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Branch, including overall management of four teams of Inspectors in the conduct of investigations. He or she will also represent the Branch at national and international level when dealing with a wide range of contacts and stakeholders.

Objectives of role

o To improve safety at sea.
o To discharge the UK’s responsibility for the independent safety investigation of marine accidents.
o To satisfy all stakeholders that marine accidents are investigated in an exemplary manner.

Key responsibilities

o Ensuring that all accident investigations are conducted thoroughly and effectively and that they meet the requirements and expectations of national and international regulations.
o Providing direction for the conduct of marine accident investigations.
o Developing and promulgating appropriate recommendations.
o Quality assurance of the MAIB’s investigation reports.
o Dealing with often complex legal issues affecting MAIB’s work.
o Providing senior management focus for the overall administration of the Branch.
o Direct management of five Principal Inspectors of Marine Accidents (who in turn have 17 specialist staff reporting to them), and the MAIB’s Head of Administration.



Person Specification


o A professional background at a senior level within the marine industry;
o A professional qualification in a recognised marine discipline, with substantial senior level experience at sea;
o Experience of sensitive negotiations to resolve difficult situations;
o Excellent written skills to be applied to the process of quality checking investigation reports;
o Excellent communication skills that extend to media appearances and senior representational roles;
o Well developed leadership skills.

o Knowledge and experience of marine accident investigation, including relevant techniques and technologies
o Experience of accountability for significant expenditure while ensuring value for money.
