Directgov is the UK government's digital service for people in England and Wales. It delivers information and practical advice about public services, bringing them all together in one place. You can access Directgov on the web, on your mobile or on your television.

What is Directgov

Directgov gives you easy access to government information and services. It uses simple language and presentation across the web, TV and mobile. Content is written in plain English, and you can read most of it in Welsh. Directgov works closely with government departments to bring information for the public all together in one place.

Directgov can help you with many things, for example:

  • booking your driving test
  • finding a job
  • paying your road tax
  • finding local services such as NHS clinics, solicitors and nurseries

The government uses Directgov to get information to the public in times of crisis or emergency, for example the swine flu outbreak.

How to use Directgov

You can find specific information and services by using the search engine, or you can browse by topics, for example:

  • motoring 
  • money
  • employment
  • education

You can find information relevant to you by looking at audience areas, for example:

  • disabled people
  • young people 
  •  parents

Do it online - government services

You can complete a number of government services online, for example:

  • apply for or renew your passport
  • apply for a provisional driving licence
  • apply for jobseeker's allowance
  • get advice on your benefits
  • use the student loan calculator
  • tax your car

Directgov on your mobile

You can get Directgov on your mobile if you can use it to connect to the internet. If you’re on the move or can’t get to a computer, you can use your phone to:

  • get the latest travel information
  • find your nearest doctor
  • find a job
  • learn about help with childcare costs

You can access Directgov mobile in two ways:

  • enter m.direct.gov.uk into your phone's internet browser
  • text MOBILE to 83377 – you’ll get a text message with a link to view Directgov mobile (standard rates apply)

Directgov on your TV

If you’re a Sky, Virgin Media, Freeview or Teletext customer you can get public information through your television with Directgov’s specially designed interactive TV service.

Examples of services you can get through your TV are:

  • searching for a job
  • getting careers advice
  • using a postcode search to find local services such as solicitors, councils and passport offices
