Text version

Noise Action Plans have been prepared by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Target areas have been identified through a series of noise maps identifying the impact of noise in 23 of the largest urban areas, and near the busiest transport routes, across England.

These maps assess the amount of noise in decibels from roads, railways and areas near airports.

The relevant authorities will then investigate these areas to determine what further measures might be taken to manage the noise.

Measures might include:

  • installing noise barriers alongside roads and railways
  • improving road surfaces
  • imposing lower speed limits

Further options to reduce levels of noise pollution might include increasing the sound insulation in homes worst affected by using secondary glazing.

Implementation of these plans aims to promote good health and good quality of life through the effective management of noise pollution.

The plans also include proposals for identifying quiet urban areas that should be protected from increases in noise.

To find out how much noise pollution affects an area of interest to you, go to www.defra.gov.uk/noisemapping.
