The UK Government and the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Scotland, England and Wales today welcomed the forthcoming visit to the United Kingdom of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Her Majesty The Queen announced earlier today that the visit will take place from 16-19 September. It will be the first ever official Papal Visit to the UK – the visit by Pope John Paul II in 1982 was a pastoral visit only.

Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Cabinet Office, has responded to the result of the ballot by the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union.
The Cabinet Secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, today gave evidence to the Justice Select Committee on the constitutional processes following a general election. As well as answering the committee's questions, he also asked them to consider this draft document setting out the existing election rules and processes. The draft document is the first chapter to be completed of a broader Cabinet Office manual that the Cabinet Secretary plans to publish later in the year.
Young People should take responsibility for their future and tell politicians their ideas, says the Minister for Youth Engagement and Citizenship. In an official Government response to the independent Youth Citizenship Commission, Dawn Butler, has called for young people “to use their voice to tell us what they want.”
After 18 months of discussions, the Cabinet Office has reached agreement with five Civil Service unions – the FDA, Prospect, the Prison Officers Association, GMB and Unite - about reforming the Civil Service Compensation Scheme. This is the scheme which sets out what departments should pay staff who are made redundant, or who volunteer for early exit programmes.
