Appointment of Non-Executive Directors to the NDA Board

06 March 2009

Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O’Brien has announced the appointment of four non-executive directors to the Board of the NDA.

They are Janette Brown, Patrick Dixon, David Owens and Alistair Wivell.

Welcoming the appointments, NDA Chairman Stephen Henwood said:

“This is an important time for our organisation as we move from our initial establishment phase to an increased emphasis on delivery and performance.

“The four new non-executive directors will bring a range of skills and experience which will be particularly valuable to the NDA. It is a testament to the progress we have made since 2005 that we are able to attract high quality candidates who want to contribute to our mission”.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the three non-executive directors who are standing down, namely Roger Scott, Lyndon Stanton and Primrose Stark. They have made a major contribution to the organisation”.

"The NDA continues to make good progress in all areas of its remit under the leadership of acting chief executive Richard Waite, including the completion of the Sellafield competition, progress around our land sales and support for the Government’s managing radioactive waste safely programme. The Board is determined that we make the right appointment to lead the NDA and, whilst this has taken longer than envisaged, it is progressing."

Mike O’Brien said:

“Cleaning up the UK’s nuclear legacy cost effectively is a top priority for the Government. The NDA is central to that task and these new appointments will complement the skills and experience of the current NDA Board to help deliver its work.

“The NDA has made great progress since it was formed in 2005 and the new non-executive appointments will greatly strengthen the advice and support to the Board.”

Janette Brown is a chartered accountant. She has over 15 years experience in the corporate finance sector, concentrating on providing strategic, financial and transaction advice for a wide range of clients. A former senior managing director of ING Barings and a director of Citigroup, Janette has worked for a number of major clients on acquisitions and raising finance, and has recently joined a company which provides high level independent strategic financial advice to companies.

Patrick Dixon was most recently regional vice president for refining at BP plc, responsible for all BP’s refineries outside the US. His career of more than 30 years in the oil industry has included executive and non-executive roles in refining, petrochemicals, trading and marketing in many parts of the world, as well as strategy, operations, mergers and acquisitions and change management. He has broad experience of English and European corporate governance.

David Owens is currently Chief Executive of Thames Water Group, appointed in 2006. Prior to that he was a divisional director of Macquarie Bank. Between 2002 and 2006 he held numerous senior interim advisory and private equity roles for major clients in the utility and energy sectors. He has extensive experience in strategic and operational roles in these sectors.

Alistair Wivell was formerly on the main board of Balfour Beatty plc and a group managing director. He was responsible for all UK construction, international civil engineering and mechanical and electrical companies within the Balfour Beatty Group. He has remained a consultant to the company since retiring, and has been engaged on a number of significant international projects. Alistair was awarded the CBE for his services to the construction industry in 1998. He is currently chairman of the Balfour Beatty Pension Fund. There are now eight non-executive Board members, including the Chairman.

Stephen Henwood was appointed Chair of the NDA on 1 March 2008. Three existing non-executive directors have had their appointments extended to 31 December 2011. They are: Nick Baldwin, Tony Cooper and David Illingworth.
