NDA welcomes Britain’s Energy Coast initiative and the National Nuclear Laboratory

23 July 2008

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has today reiterated its support and continued commitment to Britain’s Energy Coast, which was launched this morning by Secretary of State for Business, John Hutton. The initiative to transform West Cumbria into Britain’s Energy Coast involves a £2 billion package of regeneration projects which build on the area’s globally important expertise and skills in nuclear and diversifies into other innovative energy technologies, such as tidal, off shore wind and micro-generation.

Speaking at the launch, Richard Waite, the NDA’s Acting Chief Executive said:

"This is a hugely significant day for West Cumbria and we recognise the importance of the Energy Coast vision in creating a bright and prosperous future for the area. The Energy Coast Masterplan and the projects it encompasses provide a strategic framework for us and others to target resources. The NDA has provided support throughout the development of that vision and in keeping with our socio-economic responsibilities remains committed to help the community achieve its objectives."

From 2005 through to 2011 the NDA will have committed around £35m into projects and initiatives that are in keeping with the Energy Coast vision. This ranges from being joint funder of the original feasibility study through to direct investment to create key skill and business infrastructure such as Energus, the Dalton Cumbria Facility and a West Cumbria campus for the University of Cumbria.

The NDA has also welcomed today’s news of the creation of a National Nuclear Laboratory, which is a concept referred to in its Strategy for the creation of a skilled workforce. Richard Waite adds:

"We strongly support the creation of a National Nuclear Laboratory and look forward to fulfilling our role in its implementation as Chair of the Customer Advisory Group."

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority was joint funder of the £500,000 feasibility study that led to the development of the West Cumbria Masterplan and is a member of the West Cumbria Strategic Forum.

Since April 2005 and through to April 2011 the NDA will have committed £35m to initiatives and projects that either form part of the Energy Coast vision or support its objectives, including:

  • Energus £ 5m
  • Dalton Cumbria Facility £10m
  • West Cumbria campus, University of Cumbria £10m
  • Academic Chair of Epidemiology £ 5m
  • Sellafield Apprenticeships £ 3m
  • Community Apprentices £ 1m
  • Foundation Degree bursaries £ 100,000 pa

It is expected the NDA’s funding will attract an equivalent amount of additional funding from government, industry and academia.
