Securities & Derivatives

National Occupational Standards for Advising on Securities & Derivatives

These are extremely pressured times for securities and derivatives practitioners. The FSSC continues to work in partnership with employers, professional bodies and trade associations to produce high quality performance Standards for the industry. We are inviting all securities and derivatives practitioners to get involved in the crucial process of shaping these Standards.

Background information

Work on developing National Occupational Standards for Advising on Securities and Derivatives first commenced in 2006, and approval for publication was secured in October 2007. These Standards are divided between Providing Retail Advice on Securities and Derivatives, and Providing Advice on Securities and Derivatives in the Non-Retail Market.

An incremental review of the Standards is now taking place - to ensure that they remain topical and relevant to the industry, and to address any gaps in coverage. We are now seeking feedback on them from a large number of practitioners, from across the four countries of the UK.

The Retail Distribution Review

Under the Retail Distribution Review it is proposed that the benchmark for certain advisory functions should be Level 4. This will impact on the competences in these National Occupational Standards (the outcomes of effective performance), which will be enhanced to reflect this raised benchmark.

By specifying what is required for competent performance, the Standards will be an essential resource for use alongside the new examination standards which are being developed for advice on securities and derivatives, and neither should be viewed in isolation.

Further information about the development of the new examination standards, resultant of the Retail Distribution Review, can be found here

YOUR opportunity to help inform these National Occupational Standards

These National Occupational Standards must be applicable to both SMEs and large organisations, and to firms operating in each of the four countries of the UK.

Consultation drafts of the Standards for both Providing Retail Advice on Securities and Derivatives, and Providing Advice on Securities and Derivatives in the Non-Retail Market are available for download below and we welcome your feedback on them via the accompanying questionnaire.

Please take the time to send your feedback so that the final versions of these Standards represent good industry practice. The closing date for responses is Monday 14 December.
