Family contact is lost the longer children stay in care
Children’s Rights Director, Roger Morgan, publishes his latest report on children’s experiences in care and finds that the longer children stay in care the more likely it is that all contact with their parents, siblings and friends are lost. Once children have been in care for over two years, they have much less contact with their birth family and for those who have been in care for over six years all contact is most likely to be lost.

Ofsted today publishes the outcomes of the new annual children’s services ratings which look at performance in 152 local authorities in England for 2009.

Over a thousand children in care voice their experiences of the care system
A year on from the first national annual survey of children’s views of being in care or living in residential education and the picture is a mixed one. Over nine out of ten children (92%) feel safe in the home they live in and 90% thought their care was good. However, over three quarters of children in care (76%) have been separated from brothers and sisters who live in different care placements and one in five (20%) continue to be bullied for being in care.

Separated from your siblings and losing touch with them, not being adequately supported by social workers and often moving from one carer to the next are just some of the concerns voiced by children in care.
The report, Children’s messages to the Minister, published today, gives first-hand accounts of children and young people in care. Produced by the Children’s Rights Director for England, Roger Morgan, the report is to be presented to delegates at the Government’s conference 'Taking stock of the children’s care system' on 16 November.
