The Department's Five Year Strategy, published in 2003, committed the Government to having 200 Academies open or in the pipeline by 2010, with 60 in London.
The Government is committed to establishing 400 academies and regards the scaling up of the programme as a national imperative, supported by the growing body of evidence that Academies are working.
There are currently 203 academies open in 83 local authorities, with up to a further 100 due to open by September 2010.
