Support for research income from charities

HEFCE provides additional support for research that universities and colleges carry out on behalf of charities. The funding amounted to approximately £194 million in 2009-10.

The research fund, announced in the Science and Innovation Investment Framework 2004-2014, is allocated to universities and colleges as part of the quality-related (QR) distribution of block grant.

The funding relates to charity research income which has been awarded through peer review and open competition. It applies to departments in universities and colleges that are also eligible for mainstream QR grant.

Further information and guidance on eligibility is available in the most recent Research Activity Survey.
