Children’s Rights Director, Roger Morgan, publishes his latest report Keeping in touch on children’s experiences in care and finds that the longer children stay in care the more likely it is that all contact with their parents, siblings and friends are lost. Once children have been in care for over two years, they have much less contact with their birth family and for those who have been in care for over six years all contact is most likely to be lost.
A picture of overall improvement in care, education and skills in England is revealed in Ofsted’s Annual Report, launched on 24 November 2009 by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector, Christine Gilbert. Bringing together powerful evidence from almost 40,000 inspections carried out during 2008/9, the report acknowledges overall progress and many successes, but also focuses on where improvements must still be made.
The outcomes of the new annual children’s services ratings look at performance in 152 local authorities in England for 2009. The annual children’s services rating is a wide-ranging and robust assessment of the outcomes for children and young people in every local authority area which is strongly based on the evidence from inspections.
Education for sustainable development: improving schools – improving lives has the findings of a three-year inspection programme looking at improvement in education for sustainable development in a selection of schools. The small-scale survey, which followed a group of schools over a three-year period, reveals that a focus on sustainable development is not only having a direct impact on the actions of pupils and their families but on the wider community.
Ofsted is preparing its first single equality scheme. This is the second stage of the consultation, the first stage identified the priority equality objectives which have shaped the scheme so far.
