Family learning

This small scale survey report evaluates aspects of family learning and its benefits for adult participants and their children, their families and the wider community.

Between September 2008 and March 2009, inspectors visited 23 local authority adult and community learning services that were receiving Learning and Skills Council funding for wider family learning, family literacy, language and numeracy, and family learning impact funding. The survey explores a range of delivery models, gives examples of good practice and makes recommendations for improvement.

Focused provision 16 to 19: a survey of colleges with sixth form centres

This report examines the arrangements made by some general further education and tertiary colleges to provide at least some of their provision for 16-19-year-old students in a ‘focused’ way, notably through the establishment of sixth form centres. The report covers the findings of a survey by Ofsted of a sample of such colleges from October 2003 to February 2004. The structure of the report is based, in the main, on the Common Inspection Framework.

Food for thought: a survey of healthy eating in registered childcare

As a result of the increased interest in the quality of food provided for children in schools and childcare, Ofsted has looked at whether children in the paid daily care of others receive good-quality meals and whether they learn at an early age the benefits of a healthy diet. This report is based on analysis of a short survey of healthy eating carried out at 110 settings across England during the last two weeks of February 2006. It will be of particular interest to early years childcare providers, parents, carers, local authorities and the Department for Education and Skills.

Food in schools: encouraging healthier eating

New interim standards for food in schools came into force in September 2006. Our survey aimed to evaluate the progress schools were making in meeting these standards and to identify strategies helping pupils and families understand healthy eating.

Food technology in secondary schools

This report evaluates the effectiveness of provision in secondary schools for food technology within the National Curriculum subject, design and technology. It examines strengths and weaknesses in pupils' achievement and the tension between the teaching of food to develop life skills and using food as a means to teach design and technology. The report draws on inspection evidence collected by HMI between 2003 and 2005 and data from Ofsted's section 10 inspection database.

This report examines some of the challenges faced by schools when special measures have been removed, and the reactions and responses of the key players in sustaining the school's improvement: the staff of the school, governors, parents, pupils and local education authorities (LEAs). It discusses the different strategies employed to maintain progress during the first 12 months after special measures have been removed in an attempt to indicate what works.
