The outcomes of the new annual children’s services ratings look at performance in 152 local authorities in England for 2009. The annual children’s services rating is a wide-ranging and robust assessment of the outcomes for children and young people in every local authority area which is strongly based on the evidence from inspections. The rating provides a picture of services for children in a local area drawn from a wide range of local services and settings.
A picture of overall improvement in care, education and skills in England is revealed in Ofsted’s Annual Report, launched on 24 November 2009 by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector, Christine Gilbert. Bringing together powerful evidence from almost 40,000 inspections carried out during 2008/9, the report acknowledges overall progress and many successes, but also focuses on where improvements must still be made.
A year on from the first national annual survey of children’s views of being in care or living in residential education and the picture in the second annual survey is a mixed one. Over nine out of ten children (92%) feel safe in the home they live in and 90% thought their care was good. However, over three quarters of children in care (76%) have been separated from brothers and sisters who live in different care placements and one in five (20%) continue to be bullied for being in care. The report, Children’s care monitor 2009, is produced by the Children’s Rights Director for England, Dr Roger Morgan.
