The Queen has approved the nomination of The Right Reverend David Charles James PhD BA BSc, Suffragan Bishop of Pontefract, for election as Bishop of Bradford, in succession to the Right Reverend David James Smith AKC (who resigns on 31 July 2002).

Notes for Editors

The Right Reverend David James (born 1945) was educated at Exeter and Nottingham Universities. Prior to ordination he was an assistant lecturer in Chemistry at Southampton University. His first curacy was at Highfield Church, Southampton from 1973 to 1976 and his second at Goring by Sea, Worthing from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he was Anglican Chaplain of the University of East Anglia, after which he served as Vicar of Ecclesfield in Sheffield Diocese until 1990. He was also Rural Dean of Ecclesfield from 1987 to 1990. From 1990 to 1998 he was Vicar of Highfield, Southampton. Since 1998 he has been Suffragan Bishop of Pontefract.

Dr James is married to Gillian and they have four daughters. Among his recreations, David lists map-reading, cricket and keeping poultry. He is also a member of the society of Ordained Scientists.
