Taking forward the Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration

The Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Bill progresses through Parliament

A review of sub-national economic development and regeneration was published on 17 July 2007.

The Government published its response to the consultation document Prosperous Places: Taking forward the Review of Sub National Economic Development and Regeneration on 25 November 2008.

Prosperous Places proposed a way forward on implementing the recommendations set out in the Review. The response set out how it would deliver more effective economic decision making and planning in England’s regions and localities.

These reforms will put in place a legal and policy framework which will assist regions, sub-regions and local areas in responding to current economic difficulties, preparing for the upturn and strengthening jobs and business growth in all areas in the longer term.

In addition to this, a set of Frequently Asked Questions on how the transition to the new arrangements will be managed can also be found with the response.

This is the original consultation paper.

On 26 January 2009, Government published its Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Bill: Policy Document on Regional Strategies. The purpose of this document was to explain Part 5 (regional strategy) of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Bill and how it would be applied when legislation is in place, and to indicate what will be covered by regulations and guidance.

The Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Bill is now in the final stages of its progress through the Lords and Commons with Royal Assent anticipated for autumn 2009.
