Background to consultation

The Guidelines on Scientific Analysis in Policy Making provide a high-level framework for addressing the way in which government departments obtain and use science and engineering advice. In October 2009, the Government response to “Putting science and engineering at the heart of government policy” was published. One of the commitments made in the response was to update the Guidelines on Scientific Analysis in Policy-Making.

Purpose of consultation

This is a consultation by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser which seeks views on the update of the Government Chief Scientific Adviser’s Guidelines on scientific analysis in policy making.

The Guidelines were last revised in October 2005. This updating allows for developments in policy making best practice to be reflected.
