Extended services in schools and children's centres

This survey aims to inform the expansion of extended services through identifying and assessing the factors which contribute to effective provision of these services in schools and children’s centres. This follows the Government’s pledge that, by 2010, ‘all children should have access to a variety of activities beyond the school day’ and that these will give them ‘the opportunity to keep fit and healthy, to acquire new skills, to build on what they learn during the school day or simply to have fun and relax’.

The Children's Fund - the second wave partnerships

The Children's Fund was introduced in 2001 in response to government policy which highlighted the need for improved services to prevent the negative effects of child poverty and reduce the risk of social exclusion. Between September 2002 and March 2003, 18 first wave fund partnerships were inspected. This report covers a further eight partnerships, mostly from the second wave.

Early years: the first national picture

Since September 2001, Ofsted has been responsible for the regulation of childminding and day care. This report presents for the first time a national picture of childcare in England. Covering regulatory activity between 1 September 2001 and 31 March 2003, the report’s findings are based on 26,300 registration visits, 81,500 transitional childcare inspections and 10,500 investigations of complaints.

The Children's Fund - first wave partnerships

The Children's Fund was established by the government in 2001. It was introduced in response to the government's social exclusion unit's policy action team on young people, which highlighted the need for improved services to prevent the negative effects of child poverty and reduce the risk of social exclusion.

Learning out of hours

This report summarises inspection and research evidence on aspects of out-of-hours learning activities in secondary schools. It focuses on those activities which have the most direct bearing on learning in school, notably homework clubs, study clubs and support for examination work. The report highlights issues about the management of out-of-hours activities.
