Rochester Riverside

Medway Council and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) have pledged that the Rochester Riverside regeneration programme in North Kent - a significant part of the Medway Waterfront proposals - will create a first class European City that will maximum use of the river.

The mixed-use development, which will be a major development in the heart of the Thames Gateway - will include homes (including affordable housing), a hotel with conference facilities, school, doctor's surgery, business units and shops.

Medway Council and South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) have forged a partnership and agreed a joint strategy in order to bring forward the regeneration of this key riverside site.

A collaboration and grant agreement has been signed which will enable SEEDA to invest substantial amounts of money in the project, to which Medway Council and its predecessor Rochester upon Medway Council has already committed significant sums on buying land on the site.

EDAW has been appointed as the team's masterplanners and Halcrow as engineering and environmental consultants. Planning applications have been lodged and demolition works are now well under way.

Environmental and wildlife surveys have been commissioned to ensure that the proposals for the area protect the natural habitats.

The development site, which is owned by Medway Council, will include:

  • between 1700 and 2000 new homes of which a quarter will be 'affordable' homes for rent, shared ownership and key workers
  • a hotel and conference centre on the north-west of the site close to Rochester Bridge
  • a school and community centre
  • start-up and grow-on space for small businesses
  • a neighbourhood store
  • a riverside walk and cycleway
  • new town squares
  • a multi-storey car park in Corporation Street on the site of the current market
  • the relocated market to Blue Boar Lane laid out as a new square
