Science can provide opportunities for pupils newly arrived in England to achieve and can therefore to raise their self-esteem. The collaborative nature of practical work in school science, plus the subject’s use of visual models and analogues, make it an ideal subject for integrating new arrivals who may have English as an additional language (EAL).

These pages describe ways in which the teaching of science can benefit children newly arrived in England and how schools can maximise the opportunities offered by the subject. The guidance suggests how teachers can modify, as necessary, the national curriculum programmes of study to provide pupils with relevant and appropriately challenging work at each key stage.
