National Literacy Strategy: the third year

The implementation of the National Literacy Strategy began in English primary schools at the start of the autumn term in 1998.The purpose of the strategy is to improve standards in literacy and the teaching of reading and writing, but inspectors found that there was not enough emphasis on shared reading in the development of pupils’ comprehension.

Nursery education: quality of provision for 3 and 4 year olds 2000–01

This report is based on 5,562 inspections of funded nursery education carried out between September 2000 and July 2001.The settings include private, voluntary, local authority and independent providers. Of the overall sample, 951 settings were being inspected for the first time. This report is the first since Ofsted took responsibility for the regulation of all under-8s day care and childminding.
