Government Offices work very closely with local authorities – who have a major impact on most aspects of people’s day to day lives – to help them improve service delivery and value for money, and to promote better policy integration across the country.

Our work in this area includes:
Local Area Agreements (LAAs)
These are a new way of working to build a more flexible and responsive relationship between central Government and a locality, working on what needs to be achieved at a local level. We have a significant role in the negotiation process, providing partners with a point of contact with central Government and ensuring that the focus of the agreement is on achieving better outcomes.
How we fit in
We are not a policing authority and as such do not intervene with the activities of a local authority unless it is in a dire situation and national policy authorises such an intervention. We exist as the middle tier between central Government and the local authorities and it is at this last level that the majority of the delivery and responsibility for the services an individual receives lies.
