Increasing the holiday entitlement - a further consultation

Starting Date: 12-01-07

Closing Date: 13-04-07

This consultation followed on from the initial one concluded in September 2006.  It included draft regulations and further details on how the Government proposes to implement the manifesto commitment to make paid time off for bank holidays additional to the four weeks’ holiday entitlement.  We published the results of research into those most likely to benefit. The research shows that 6 million people will benefit from increased holiday entitlements as a result of these proposals.

It was proposed that the statutory entitlement to paid holiday will be increased from four weeks to 4.8 weeks from 1 October 2007, and from 4.8 weeks to 5.6 weeks on 1 October 2008, subject to a maximum statutory entitlement of 28 days.

The consultation sought views on the draft regulations and on implementation of this change, including what guidance would help employers to introduce the additional holiday entitlement.

This consultation relates to England, Wales and Scotland. The Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland will consult on similar proposals for Northern Ireland.

Changes have been made to the proposals as a result of the further consultation and are detailed in the Government response.
