Ways to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions

Get a grant to reduce energy costs in your home

Call ACT ON CO2 on 0800 512 012 or visit their website

Some of the ways you can cut your carbon emissions include:

  • from 1 September 2009, you must replace old light bulbs with energy saving ones
  • cut back on journeys you do not need to make
  • use a delivery service instead of driving to the supermarket for the weekly shop
  • insulating your home can cut up to £300 per year from your household fuel bill
  • fitting solar tiles to a south facing roof can generate free hot water, or extra power that you can sell back to your energy supplier

Homeowners and landlords can get capital grants towards the cost of insulation or fitting solar tiles. Contact your energy supplier for details, or call the 'Act on CO2' advice line on 0800 512 012.

In 2010, watch out for “Pay As You Save” (PAYS) - a new way to pay for whole-house energy retrofits.

Know your carbon footprint

The 'Act on CO2' website has many more energy saving tips and can help you work out your carbon footprint. Knowing how much carbon you use will help you see where to cut back by ten per cent in 2010.
