Departmental Report 2007-08

The Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills came into being on 1 April 2007.
This new Ofsted has brought together people with wide expertise, experience and skills from: the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI), the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI), Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Court Administration (HMICA) and the Office of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools (the former Ofsted).

We are working together to make a greater difference for all children, young people and adult learners.

This report - Raising standards, improving lives - focuses on the work of the new Ofsted in our first year of operation from April 2007 to the end of March 2008.

Equality and diversity in Ofsted - Employment report 2007-08

A new Ofsted with a much expanded remit came into place in April 2007. This report covers work undertaken to promote equalities within Ofsted since then. This report focuses solely on equal opportunities within Ofsted and not on the external-facing aspect of Ofsted’s work in inspecting and reporting on the equality and diversity performance of the settings it inspects and regulates.

Inspection judgements 2007/08 for maintained schools

Inspection judgements for 2007/08 are presented in these workbooks. They include inspection judgements from section 5, or section 8 deemed 5, inspections during the 2007/08 academic year. Inspectors make judgements either on a four point scale (1 = outstanding, 2 = good, 3 = satisfactory, 4 = inadequate) or answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

There are five Excel workbooks that you can download as compressed zip files. The workbook in the first zip file contains inspection judgements at school level. This brings together individual inspection judgements included in each inspection report. The four workbooks in the second zip file contain inspection judgements by phase shown as percentages. Additionally, there are further breakdowns for the main inspection judgements for primary and secondary schools by free school meal eligibility and by school size, and a breakdown by specialism for secondary schools.

In future these data will be published on a termly basis with the following timetable:

  • autumn data on the third Wednesday in March
  • spring data on the third Wednesday in June
  • summer data on the third Wednesday in November, unless this falls before the publication of the Annual Report in which case the data will be published at the same time as the Annual Report.
