Amanda Fegan Lead Associate - The Productive Operating Theatre

Amanda FeganAmanda Fegan began her career in retail, spending ten years working for a well known department store in Knightsbridge, London.  Here she developed a range of transferrable skills in operational management, which she brought to the NHS in 1995 when she began a business managerial post at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust, focussing on Reproductive Medicine and the Centre for Fetal Care.

Keen to develop her work in the NHS, she went on to take up a position as Practice Manager for a GP Practice.  Whilst at the practice Amanda was instrumental in establishing in-house and community services for the benefit of registered patients.  From here Amanda moved on to the West London Cancer Network, where she led phase two of a Cancer Services Collaborative programme.  She played a key role in reducing waiting times from referral to treatment from 120 days to 20 days for gynae cancers, as well as designing and implementing a network wide change programme, which supported over 40 service improvement projects.

Amanda went on to join the West Middlesex University Hospital to drive forward service improvement.  Her key achievements included reducing emergency length of stay and improving theatre utilisation and day surgery.

In 2007 Amanda joined the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, as Lead Associate for developing and rolling out The Productive Operating Theatre programme to NHS organisations across England.  Her hopes for the programme is that it will help theatre teams overcome the issues and frustrations that they face on a day to day basis, which ultimately will lead to improved patient outcome and experiences.

Hugh Rogers, Senior Associate - The Productive Operating Theatre

Hugh RogersHugh Rogers is a urologist who, as a Clinical Director throughout the ‘90s, led a series of award winning service redesign projects in his trust. From 1999 – 2005 Hugh held leadership roles in the Modernisation Agency, with the Cancer Collaborative and Booking programmes and the Improvement Partnership for Hospitals.  

Since 2005 he has been a Senior Associate at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement where he leads on Clinical Systems Improvement, a body of knowledge adapted from manufacturing improvement methods and operations management. He is expert on interventions to improve clinical reliability and safety and thereby reduce avoidable mortality in hospitals.

Hugh is now working on the development of The Productive Operating Theatre programme. The aim of this is to use a combination of advanced quality improvement methods and team-work training to achieve a step change in operating theatre performance.

Jodie Mazur, Associate - The Productive Operating Theatre

Jodie MazurJodie Mazur is an Associate at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and is currently working on the development of The Productive Operating Theatre programme.  During her time at the Institute she has also been part of the No Delays programme developing the No Delays Achiever, a web based analytical and service improvement tool that supported the NHS to deliver the 18 week pathway.

She has a wide range of experience of health service improvement developed through working in a number of different organisations.  After graduating, she joined the NHS Modernisation Agency, working briefly for the Cancer Services Collaborative, before moving to the Performance Development Team in a research role supporting zero star trusts (Acute, PCT, Mental Health and Ambulance) achieve turnaround.

Jodie gained an international perspective of Service Improvement as part of the NHS CGST’s International team, where she worked as an improvement facilitator at a Hospital in Portugal carrying out an assessment of their health care governance.  Immediately prior to working at the Institute Jodie was a Service Improvement Manager jointly appointed to work across, what was then Central Manchester PCT and Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s NHS Trust.

Helen Rathbone - Project Manager

Helen RathboneHelen Rathbone is a Project Manager at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and is currently working on the development of The Productive series, as well as helping to influence and build the NHS Institute’s project management approach.

She began her career as a technical telecoms engineer for a well known global communications company before moving into project management through her experience in this area.  Helen worked in various areas of the company undertaking a wide variety of projects including delivery of a new global financial system, TUPE transfers and installing a nationwide broadband network.

Helen moved on to work for a consultancy firm helping them to deliver effective management reporting and structured communications in a large programme of international interest. From there she returned to the technical delivery and nationwide role out of IT and telecoms.

In September 2008 Helen joined the NHS Institute, bringing with her a wealth of industrial experience to help with service improvement. Since her arrival she has concentrated most of her time on supporting the delivery of The Productive Operating Theatre and Productive Community Services programmes.

Outside of work Helen lives in Coventry and enjoys running and coaching young athletes.
