Tackling delay January 2004
An inspection report, published in 2004 and available in English and Welsh, on the actions taken by CAFCASS Headquarters to reduce delay and their effect on one English Region (Greater London) and CAFCASS Cymru. The report includes both Inspectorate recommendations and CAFCASS's action plans for implementing them.

Teacher trainees and phonics: An evaluation of the response of providers of initial teacher training to the recommendations of the Rose Review
This report details the findings of a small-scale survey that evaluated the response of 20 providers of initial teacher training to the recommendations of the Rose Review. These providers represented a range of traditional and non-traditional routes into teaching. The survey aimed to ascertain the extent to which the providers had modified their courses so that trainees received appropriate direction on the teaching of early reading, including systematic phonics. It also evaluated the trainees' practical application of the principles underpinning the Rose Review in their teaching.

The changing landscape of languages
The report evaluates the strengths and weaknesses in modern languages from survey inspections of primary and secondary schools, initial teacher education and adult education between 2004 and 2007. It does so at a time of rapid change. In primary schools, provision for languages is increasing year on year, but in secondary schools the take-up from age 14 is rapidly declining, and there is concern about the decrease in the number of young people able to speak a language other than English.

The children's view of inspection
During November 2004, the Children's Rights Director and his team undertook a detailed consultation programme, seeking the views of over 150 children and young people on the inspection process. The result is this report, published in 2005, which is the first Children's Audit Report presents children's views on CSCI inspections.

This report is based on evidence from inspections of information and communication technology (ICT) between September 2005 and July 2008 in 177 maintained schools in England, as well as other visits to schools where good practice was identified.
Part A describes the quality of ICT education in primary and secondary schools over this period. Part B considers how tackling assessment, vocational qualifications, value for money and resources might improve ICT provision.

The initial training of further education teachers
This report presents an overview of the 2004–2008 inspection cycle of initial teacher training for further education, including national awarding body qualifications.
It sets out the changes and developments over the four-year cycle of inspection, including the recent major structural reforms which were significantly influenced by inspection findings. It also evaluates the extent to which providers visited in 2007/08 have modified their programmes and evaluated their provision so that trainees are equipped with the skills and competencies needed for high-quality teaching.

The right people for me: helping children do well in long-term foster care
