Preparing Impact Assessments

The Better Regulation Executive has produced guidance, a toolkit and standard templates to help policy-makers prepare Impact Assessments (IAs). You can download all these documents here.

Impact Assessment guidance and toolkit

The guidance explains what an IA is, which types of intervention require them and how to create one. This should be used together with the toolkit, which provides more detailed advice and information to ensure assessments take account of all relevant factors.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered in the guidance or toolkit, please contact your department’s Better Regulation Unit.

Impact Assessment template

There is also a standard template which anyone creating an IA should follow, to ensure every proposal is scrutinised in a consistent way. The IA guidance outlines what should be included in each part of the template.

To use the interactive form below, you must enable macros on your machine. You can download a guide to help you do this.

(When downloading the impact assessment template, right click your browser and 'choose save target as', saving the document to your local system before opening).
