FREE Training - how will climate change affect your community?

Climate change will affect is all. But how? The UK Climate Projection tools were launched on 18 June. These can be used to give a picture of what things might be like in your community in the future, in terms of the rainfall and temperatures you can expect. This information will be of great interest to any third sector organisation helping communities plan for the future.

To help you get the most from these tools we will be running free training for third sector organisations in their use. The training will take place in Reading on 28 July. Full details, including the booking process, are contained in this leaflet (pdf, 105K).

UK Climate Projections launched (significant!)

Melting Tarmac
This image shows one of the things that happens in the UK if temperatures rise to 35 C on two consecutive days - the roads melt. So what are the chances of this happening? Well this is the sort of thing that the UK Climate Projections tools, launched by Defra later today (18/6/09), are designed to tell you . . . amongst other things.

Defra has decided to take a completely open approach to the launch of these very sophisticated tools. Anyone will be able to register to use them online. Using an online “weather generator”, citizens, businesses, communities and local authorities will be able to see the probability, at any point in the future, of different temperatures and rainfall in all parts of the country which has been split in to 25km squares for these purposes. The projections also include sea level information.

We know that these tools will be of great interest to the Third Sector, particularly local community groups planning for the future. For example, they have the potential to add a new dimension to ACRE’s community planning initiatives or to the Plunkett Foundation’s support for rural community enterprise. They will also help support the activities of community networks such as the Low Carbon Communities Network (LCCN) and Transition Towns.

There is a range of support available to help the Third Sector get the most out of the projections. In collaboration with Defra’s ‘Adaptation to Climate Change‘ team, we are arranging training days for environmental and non-environmental third sector groups in July. We will announce the dates here on this blog and through other channels shortly. But you don’t need to wait for that - register now and have a go! There is online help and there are support forums you can join. Please let us know how you get on. We are particularly interested to hear how local groups use these tools.

Funding Central launched

Funding Central 002
Today (17/6/09) saw the launch of Funding Central - the smart guide to over 4,000 grants and loans for the third sector. Funding Central will be run by NCVO in partnership with J4b and is funded by the Office of the Third Sector. We are making a minor contribution to this initiative in trying to ensure that Defra-related funding streams are included in the database now and in the future. I am sure there are gaps though and if you spot any please let us know.

Government Ministers helped ‘relaunch’ the Third Sector Climate Change Declaration today (15 June) at the RSA in central London.

Huw Irranca-Davies MP (Minister for Marine and Natural Environment, Defra) and Joan Ruddock MP (Minister of State, DECC) joined a range of signatories, both new and old, to reaffirm their commitment to deliver behaviour change at all levels to combat climate change.

Huw Irranca-Davies MP spoke of the sector’s capacity “to make a seismic change” in tackling climate change before signing the Ministerial Statement in support of the declaration.
